Governors Keating and Henry Join Effort to Create a Memorial for Oklahoma Native American Warriors

The Force 50 Foundation is proud to announce that former Oklahoma Governors Frank Keating and Brad Henry have joined its leadership team as Special Advisors for the Native American Warrior Project. They join Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby and Honorary Chairman Coach Barry Switzer in advancing a historic initiative: the creation of a monument at the newly established Oklahoma Veterans Memorial Park, located on the grounds of the State Capitol, to honor the long history of Native American military service to the state and nation.

This monument is the first of several that will be part of a unique state park, dedicated to honoring all Oklahoma veterans for their service and sacrifice. It also supports Force 50’s mission to highlight stories of service and resilience, and to promote unity among tribal, civic, and state leaders.

Since 9/11, Native Americans have served at a higher per-capita rate than any other ethnic group. While their reasons for serving are as diverse as their tribal affiliations, many cite their desire to follow in the footsteps of family members and the cultural value placed on patriotism, duty, and Warrior traditions.

“We’re honored to help bring this vision to life,” Keating and Henry said in a joint statement. “This park will stand as a lasting tribute to Oklahoma’s veterans, and it’s fitting that the first monument recognizes the extraordinary contributions of Native warriors throughout our history.”

The announcement comes with heartfelt remembrance of former Governor George Nigh who served as a Special Advisor to Force 50 until his recent passing. Nigh, Oklahoma’s first consecutive two-term governor, was widely admired for his leadership in government and higher education. His legacy of public service and bipartisan collaboration continues to guide the Foundation’s work.

“Governor Nigh set the standard for what it means to serve,” Keating reflected. “Joining this effort alongside Governor Henry is a way to honor Nigh’s vision and ensure Oklahoma continues to lead with integrity and purpose.”

Henry added, “George Nigh believed in building a better Oklahoma through partnership and public service. That’s the spirit we bring to Force 50 as we honor Native warriors and strengthen our state’s commitment to veterans.”

Fundraising for the project kicked off last December and has featured concerts, participation in community events and a statewide tour visiting civic leaders across the state. Force 50 seeks to create a memorial that forever honors the legacy of First American warriors and support a lasting tribute at the heart of Oklahoma.

“We share a love and dedication to the citizens of Oklahoma and recognize the outstanding service of so many who have built this great state,” Henry said. “It’s a privilege to work with Governor Keating and carry forward the mantle of Governor Nigh in service of this powerful mission.”
